What is allopurinol (Zyloprim)?
High levels of a chemical called uric acid can result in medical conditions such as kidney stones and gout (a type of arthritis that usually affects one joint at a time by having crystals get stuck in the joint). Zyloprim, also known by its generic name allopurinol, is a prescription medication that can lower levels of uric acid in the body and help manage these conditions.
Allopurinol is used to prevent uric acid crystals from forming in the joints, which can decrease gout attacks. It’s also used to treat kidney stones caused by high uric acid levels. Lastly, allopurinol is prescribed to people taking chemotherapy medications that can cause uric acid buildup.
How does allopurinol (Zyloprim) work?
Allopurinol is part of a medication class called xanthine oxidase inhibitors. An enzyme called xanthine oxidase makes a waste product called uric acid in the body. While everyone’s body creates uric acid, high levels of this substance can result in medical conditions such as kidney stones and gout.
Allopurinol can prevent the xanthine oxidase enzyme from creating uric acid. Lowering overall uric acid levels can lower the risk of kidney stones and gout.
Allopurinol can help people manage multiple medical conditions related to uric acid levels, but it can take time to yield benefits. Before prescribing you allopurinol, your healthcare provider will likely perform lab tests to determine your uric acid levels. This information helps them determine the best dosage strength for your issue.
Can I get allopurinol (Zyloprim) online?
A licensed medical provider can prescribe an allopurinol prescription online. Your healthcare provider must determine that you have a medical condition that would benefit from allopurinol and they can send your prescription to a pharmacy.
What does allopurinol (Zyloprim) treat?
Allopurinol prevents and treats issues related to high levels of uric acid in the body such as:
- Gout
- Kidney stones (especially recurrent ones)
- High uric acid levels caused by chemotherapy
Although allopurinol can prevent gout attacks from occurring, it does not treat attacks that are already happening. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage pain, swelling, and redness from gout attacks.
What are the side effects?
Like any medication, allopurinol may cause unwanted side effects. Some of the most common side effects of allopurinol include:
- Drowsiness
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Joint pain, stiffness, or swelling
- Nerve pain
- Fever
- Chills
- Change in taste
- Changes in lab tests
Speak to your healthcare provider if your allopurinol side effects are not improving or getting worse.
Rarely, allopurinol can cause severe side effects. If you experience any of the following symptoms when taking allopurinol, seek medical care right away:
- Hives
- Rash
- Trouble breathing
- Swelling
- Bloody urine
- Pain while urinating
- Difficulty urinating
- Easy bruising
- Excessive bleeding

- Hyperuricemia (high uric acid in the blood)

Allopurinol may cause worsening gout attacks when you first start taking it. If you’re taking allopurinol to prevent gout, your healthcare provider will work with you to identify the right dose and prevent side effects. It may take a few weeks to experience relief. Your provider can recommend ways to treat pain and swelling from gout attacks, such as over-the-counter pain relievers.
In some people, allopurinol may increase the likelihood of developing kidney stones. Drinking plenty of fluids when you take allopurinol may reduce this risk.
Consume alcohol with caution when you take allopurinol. Because allopurinol can cause drowsiness, alcohol may worsen its effects. Consuming alcohol may also worsen medical conditions caused by high levels of uric acid.

Can I use my insurance to pay for K Health?
With the exception of certain Surest and Elevance Health plans, we don’t accept insurance to pay for K Health memberships, one-time Urgent Care virtual visits, or mail-order medication, but we keep our prices low to keep medical care accessible to everyone. In many cases, our prices are lower than your insurance copay would have been!
If your medical provider prescribes you medication to pick up at your local pharmacy or orders bloodwork to a lab of your choice, you can use your insurance at those locations.
