Asthma Inhaler FAQs

Can you get an asthma inhaler online?

Yes, you can get a prescription for asthma treatment or an inhaler through one of our licensed online medical providers. Schedule an appointment through KHealth to discuss your medical concerns. They will ask you several questions about your recent symptoms, your past medical history, and the medications you are currently taking.

After reviewing this information and talking with you, if our medical provider believes you would benefit from an inhaler or if you just need a refill, they can electronically send the prescription to the pharmacy of your choice. If you are experiencing symptoms that require an in-person assessment, the telehealth provider will let you know to make an in-person appointment.

Types of asthma inhalers

Asthma is a chronic medical condition that affects the airways of the lungs. It can cause chest tightness, wheezing, and breathlessness. An inhaler is a type of device that pushes albuterol, a medication that opens the airways, or another medication, into your lungs. Some people with persistent asthma symptoms require daily or twice daily inhaler medication in addition to an as-needed inhaler. People with mild asthma may use only their albuterol inhalers as needed.

There are three main types of inhalers, soft mist, dry powder, and metered dose inhalers. Each type of inhaler has a different administration and inhalation technique and a different cost. Choosing the correct type of inhaler for your asthma is an important decision. The correct type depends on several factors, such as the severity of your asthma symptoms, age, insurance coverage, and ability to use the inhaler.

Rescue Inhaler

Rescuer inhalers, also known as reliever inhalers or quick-relief inhalers, contain bronchodilator medications that immediately open your constricted airways to help you breathe easier.

Rescue inhalers include:

  • Albuterol (ProAir HFA, Proventil HFA, Ventolin HFA)
  • Levalbuterol (Xopenex HFA)

Preventative inhaler

Preventative inhalers, also called controller inhalers, have anti-inflammatory corticosteroid medications that help reduce inflammation in the lungs and thus prevent asthma attacks. Some people with asthma use these types of inhalers daily to improve their overall lung health.

Preventative inhalers include:

  • Fluticasone (Flovent HFA)
  • Budesonide (Plumicort Flexhaler)
  • Mometasone (Asmanex Twisthaler)
  • Beclomethasone (Qvar RediHaler)
  • Ciclesonide (Alvesco)

Combination inhalers

Combination inhalers contain both bronchodilators and steroids. These may be recommended for those with more severe asthma symptoms to help control their symptoms and prevent asthma attacks.

Combination inhalers include:

  • Fluticasone and salmeterol (Advair Diskus)
  • Budesonide and formoterol (Symbicort)
  • Mometasone and formoterol (Dulera)
  • Fluticasone and vilanterol (Breo)

How much do asthma inhalers cost?

How much your inhaler costs depends on several factors, such as which inhaler you need, the strength of your prescription, if you have insurance, and which pharmacy you use. It also depends on if you get the name-brand or generic medication. If you have questions about the price of your prescription, you can speak with your pharmacist. There are also coupons online for prescriptions that can help cover the cost of many medications.

Do I need a prescription for an asthma inhaler?

Yes, asthma inhalers are medications that require a prescription from a qualified healthcare provider. If you need a prescription or refill for an asthma inhaler, contact a K Health provider to discuss your medication needs and receive a prescription, if appropriate.

Can I manage my asthma online?

Yes, if you are not having trouble breathing or severe symptoms, you can manage your non-emergent asthma symptoms online using K Health. When you successfully manage your asthma, you will breathe easier, get more active, sleep well, and be free from coughing and wheezing. You will also keep yourself out of the hospital.

Understanding your asthma triggers and warning signs of an oncoming asthma attack will help you avoid your triggers and decrease your asthma attacks. Talk with a K Health provider about your asthma to learn more about this disease and the steps you can take to manage it. You can also make an Asthma Action Plan which goes over the steps you need to take when you feel an asthma attack coming on.
