What is Celexa?
Celexa, also known under the generic name citalopram, is an antidepressant medication that was first approved by the FDA in 1998.
Part of a drug class known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), Celexa can help increase the brain levels of a chemical called serotonin, which can help relieve depression symptoms.
While Celexa is approved for treating major depressive disorder, it has a few other uses. Doctors also prescribe Celexa for generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, alcohol use disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
If you’re struggling with depression or anxiety, your health care provider or a K doctor can help you determine whether Celexa is a good fit for your symptoms.
Do you need a prescription for Celexa?
Celexa isn’t a good match for everyone. While it’s been shown to help with depression symptoms, Celexa also comes with side effects in drug interactions, like any other drug.
For that reason, Celexa is only available by prescription. If your health care provider thinks Celexa is the right medication for you, they will also recommend the best dosage and explain how to take it and help you manage potential side effects.
How does Celexa work?
Medical experts believe depression and anxiety stem in part from an imbalance of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that’s important for regulating mood.
Celexa is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Normally, when serotonin is done relaying a message, your brain absorbs it. SSRIs prevent your brain from completing this process, so more of this important neurotransmitter is available.
As a result, many people taking SSRIs report improved depression and anxiety symptoms.
While drugs like Celexa can help to improve mood, it’s only one ingredient of mental health. Your health care provider may also recommend other evidence-based treatments to improve your mood, such as psychotherapy and exercise.
How long does it take for Celexa to work?
Celexa can be an effective way to treat depression and anxiety symptoms, but like other SSRIs, it doesn’t work fully right away for most people.
You may notice your symptoms start to improve within two weeks, but it could take four weeks or even a couple of months to feel completely better.
In addition, you may experience unwanted side effects such as nausea, dizziness, or fatigue when you first start taking Celexa.
If your depression or anxiety symptoms are still interfering with your life after a month or two on the medication, speak with your healthcare provider. You may need a different dosage or to try another medication.
In any case, don’t stop taking Celexa or change your dosage without talking to your doctor first.
Can you buy Celexa online?
You can purchase Celexa and other drugs online if you have a prescription. Online pharmacies usually offer drugs at cheaper prices than in-person retailers, which is a good way to keep your medication costs as low as possible.
Buying prescriptions online is also convenient. If you order your Celexa online, it will be delivered right to your door.
Is there a generic for Celexa?
Celexa is also sold in its generic form, citalopram. Like Celexa, citalopram is only available with a prescription from a licensed medical professional.
In general, brand-name drugs are more expensive than generic ones. If you’re concerned about the cost of your medications, choosing a generic option could save you money.
Citalopram should be as effective as brand-name Celexa. In the United States, all generic drugs must have the same active ingredients, be available at the exact same dosage, and be equally effective at treating the intended medical condition.
Side effects
While Celexa can be effective in treating depression and anxiety, it may also cause unwanted side effects. Some of the most common side effects of Celexa are:
- Headache
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Dry mouth
- Nervousness
- Restlessness
- Fatigue
- Insomnia
- Increased sweating
- Decreased libido
- Decreased ability to orgasm
Many of these side effects get better over time, but if yours persist or get worse, speak to your doctor. You may need a different dose of Celexa or a new medication to treat your depression or anxiety.
In rare cases, Celexa can cause a serious allergic reaction.
Seek emergency medical care right away if you develop the following signs of an allergic reaction to Celexa:
- Hives
- Rash
- Blisters
- Difficulty breathing
- Facial swelling
- Throat or tongue swelling
Dosages
Celexa is most commonly prescribed in tablet form. Follow your doctor or pharmacist’s instructions when you take Celexa.
Celexa dosage usually ranges from 20 to 40 milligrams daily.
Dosage depends on many factors, including your symptoms. Many people start on a low dose of Celexa and increase it as needed.
Usually, higher doses of Celexa result in more side effects.
Interactions
Celexa may interact with other drugs. Be sure to let your health care provider know if you take any of the following medications before you take Celexa:
- Alprazolam
- Aripiprazole
- Amphetamine/dextroamphetamine
- Aspirin
- Clonazepam
- Fentanyl

This isn’t a complete list of drug interactions with Celexa. Your doctor can explain other potential interactions and help you decide whether Celexa is a good fit for you.
Cost
The cost of Celexa depends on several factors, including dosage, your pharmacy, and your insurance coverage.
If keeping drug costs low is a priority for you, consider shopping online for Celexa. A healthcare provider can prescribe Celexa online, or you can use your doctor’s prescription to get Celexa at a lower price online.
It’s also a good idea to speak with your health care provider about using the generic version of Celexa, citalopram, to decrease costs.
Is Celexa right for you?
If you’ve been suffering from depression or anxiety symptoms most days for two weeks or more, it may be time to speak with a health care provider about taking an antidepressant.
Celexa is one option for treating your symptoms.
Your health care provider is your best resource for learning if Celexa is a safe and effective option for you.
