Albuterol (Ventolin) is a medication designed to help people experiencing bronchospasms or diseases that affect the lungs and airways such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Albuterol helps to treat:

- Coughing
Albuterol comes in several strengths and forms, including:
- Aerosol metered-dose inhaler

Albuterol (Ventolin) is in a class of medications called bronchodilators. Bronchodilators act on the smooth muscles surrounding the bronchi (air passageways) in your lungs, causing them to relax. This opens the air passages wider and allows for easier airflow and breathing.

- Runny or stuffy nose

- Pain or burning when you urinate
- Severe headache or pounding in your neck or ears
- High blood sugar (symptoms include increased thirst, frequent urination, dry mouth, and fruity-smelling breath)
If you take albuterol and experience any of the following signs of an allergic reaction, call 911:
- Hives
- Trouble breathing
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
Precautions and risks of albuterol (Ventolin)
Only use albuterol (Ventolin) as prescribed, as an overdose can be fatal. If you believe that you have taken too much, seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Helpline at 1-800-222-1222
Do not use albuterol (Ventolin) if you’re allergic to albuterol.
This medication is not approved for use for people younger than four years old.
Albuterol may increase the risk of hospitalization or death in some people with asthma, especially children, if used incorrectly or not as prescribed.
Before taking this medication, tell your medical provider if you have:
- Heart disease or high blood pressure
- Thyroid disorder
- Diabetes
- Low potassium
- Seizures
Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. The risks to the fetus are unknown at this time.
It is not safe to breastfeed while using Ventolin HFA.
Ventolin HFA canisters can burst in extreme heat. Always keep your canister with you and never store your inhaler in your car on hot days. Never throw an empty canister into an open flame.

A medical team of board-certified doctors and licensed nurse practitioners creates personalized care plans to make it easier for you to manage chronic conditions, change a habit, or just live healthier. Your medical team can remotely prescribe medication, order lab tests, and more.

Can I use my insurance to pay for K Health?
With the exception of certain Surest and Elevance Health plans, we don’t accept insurance to pay for K Health memberships, one-time Urgent Care virtual visits, or mail-order medication, but we keep our prices low to keep medical care accessible to everyone. In many cases, our prices are lower than your insurance copay would have been!
If your medical provider prescribes you medication to pick up at your local pharmacy or orders bloodwork to a lab of your choice, you can use your insurance at those locations.
